Activating your credit card travel insurance

Platinum or Gold credit card holders get travel insurance with their card. The type of cover and how to activate that cover, is different depending on the type of card you have^^.

Cover for pre-existing medical conditions
Pre-existing conditions aren’t covered under your policy, so get in touch with us for a quote for additional cover, or for trip extensions, and specific items.

Platinum cardholders

Activate your travel insurance before you leave New Zealand

BNZ Platinum cardholders (including joint and additional cardholders) can activate your travel insurance cover by simply being a Platinum card holder at the time you make a payment towards any of your pre-paid travel costs such as pre-paid accommodation, pre-paid tours or return overseas travel tickets.

That’s all.  You don't need to call us, and there’s no lengthy form to fill in.  

Make sure you keep any receipts, bank statements, emails or other proof that you’ve activated your travel insurance. If you make a claim, we’ll need to see these original documents.

Cover for spouses or children

Platinum cardholder spouse and/or dependent children accompanying you on your journey, will also be covered.  For full details, read your policy document. 

Gold cardholders

Activate your travel insurance before leaving New Zealand

Gold card holders (including joint and additional cardholders) can activate their 35 days travel insurance cover by either of these two options:

  1. Pay for at least $500 of their pre-paid travel costs (or $250 of pre-paid travel costs if travelling only to Australia and/or a South Pacific Island) with their Gold card.

  2. Use frequent flyer points or Fly Buys points to pay for the full return airfare. Any airport, departure and transportation taxes and surcharges that you are required to pay at the time of booking your travel must be charged to your BNZ Gold Card.

Make sure you keep any receipts, bank statements, emails or other proof that you’ve activated your travel insurance. If you make a claim, we’ll need to see these original documents.

Gold credit cards are no longer on sale but are still covered by the Gold insurance policy. 

Financial strength rating

This insurance is underwritten by Cigna Life Insurance New Zealand Limited, which has an A- (Excellent) financial strength rating given by A.M. Best Company Inc. See more rating information.
