Children under 18 years old
To open an account for someone under 18 years old, we need to verify their identity and confirm their address. You may need to provide additional documents for yourself as the parent(s) or guardian(s).
Accounts for a child under 13 years old
To open an account for a child under 13 years old, we need to verify their identity and yours.
Verifying your child’s identity
These are the documents you’ll need to provide.
- Your child’s ID - see options 1 or 2 on ID requirements.
- If using option 1, this would be your child’s primary photo ID, e.g. valid New Zealand or overseas passport.
- If using option 2, a non-photo form of ID can be used as a stand-alone ID document, e.g. a birth certificate.
- Confirmation of your child’s address as per our address requirements. Your child can also use a letter from a registered medical practice or hospital as proof of address.
- If the child can’t go into a branch, you can use a trusted referee for ID certification.
Verifying your identity as the parent(s) or guardian(s)
These are the documents you’ll need to provide.
- Your valid ID, see ID requirements for valid documents you can bring.
- Confirmation of your address as per our address requirements.
- Confirmation of your relationship to the child.

Accounts for a child aged 13-17 years old
To open an account for someone aged 13-17 years (inclusive), we need to verify the child’s identity. Parent(s) or guardian(s) ID is required in some cases.
Verifying the child’s identity
These are the documents you’ll need to provide.
- The child’s (account owner’s) ID - see options 1, 2, or 3 on ID requirements.
- If using option 1, this would be your child’s primary photo ID, e.g. valid New Zealand or overseas passport.
- If using option 2, a non-photo form of ID can be used as a stand-alone ID document, e.g. a birth certificate.
- If using option 3, any valid New Zealand driver licence can be used.
- Confirmation of the child’s (account owner’s) address as per our address requirements. A letter from a registered medical practice or hospital can also be used as proof of address.
- Children aged 13-17 can either go into branch to open an account, or open an account online through RealMe®.
Verifying the parent(s) or guardian(s) identity
A parent(s) or guardian(s) ID is required if the:
- parent(s) or guardian(s) wants to act on the account and the child agrees, they can be added
- child is using non-photo form of ID from option 2, as a stand-alone ID document, e.g. a birth certificate.
These are the documents the parent(s) or guardian(s) will need to provide.
- Their valid ID, see ID requirements for valid documents.
- Their confirmation of address as per our address requirements.
- Their confirmation of the relationship to the child.

BNZ KiwiSaver Scheme applications
Only one parent or guardian is required to sign the application form and provide their ID and address. If the applicant is 16 or 17 years old, they will also be required to sign the application form. See ID requirements for valid documents you can bring. Additional documents may be required to evidence the relationship between the child and parent(s) or guardian(s).
