Children under 18 years old
To open accounts for children under 18 years old, you’ll need to verify their identity, confirm their address, and in some instances, provide additional documents for yourself as the parent(s) or guardian(s).
Accounts for a child under 13 years old
To open an account for your child under 13 years old, you’ll need:
- ID and proof of address for yourself as the parent(s) or guardian(s). See ID requirements for valid documents you can bring. (If you’re the legal guardian of a child, you might need to supply additional documents as evidence of this.)
- Your child’s ID as per options 1 and 2. If using option 2, a non-photo form of ID can be used as a stand-alone document (i.e. your child can provide their birth certificate as a stand-alone ID document).
- Confirmation of your child’s address as per our address requirements. Your child can also use a letter from a registered medical practice or hospital as proof of address.
- If you’re unable to go into a branch, you are able to use a trusted referee for ID certification.

Accounts for a child aged 13-17 years
To open an account for your child aged 13-17 (years inclusive), you’ll need:
- ID and proof of address for yourself as the parent(s) or guardian(s) if you will be acting on the account. See ID requirements for valid documents you can bring. (If you’re the legal guardian of a child, you might need to supply additional documents as evidence of this.)
- Your child’s ID as per options 1, 2, or 3. If using option 2, a non-photo form of ID can be used as a stand-alone document (i.e. your child can provide their birth certificate as a stand-alone ID document). If using option 3, a New Zealand learner endorsement can be used together with one of the group 3 options.
- Confirmation of your child’s address as per our address requirements. Your child can also use a letter from a registered medical practice or hospital as proof of address.

BNZ KiwiSaver Scheme applications
Only one parent or guardian is required to sign the application form and provide their ID and address. If the applicant is 16 or 17 years old, they will also be required to sign the application form. See ID requirements for valid documents you can bring. If you’re the legal guardian of the child, you might need to supply additional documents as evidence of this.
