New Zealand’s recently announced Business Investor Visa is more than a policy change - it’s an invitation. It invites global investors to contribute to the long-term growth of our economy.

It's a timely reminder: capital alone doesn’t unlock growth. Strategic, smart capital does.

The Business Investor Visa creates two pathways:

  • NZD $1 million investment in an existing business, for a 3-year work-to-residence pathway
  • NZD $2 million investment in an existing business, for a 12-month fast-track to residence pathway

Both require investors to buy or invest in an existing business, bringing not just capital, but experience and intent.

This comes at a welcome time as many small-to-medium (SME) New Zealand businesses are owned by founders nearing retirement, often without succession plans. One in four SMEs are predicted to come up for sale in the next 10 years[1].

The growth lens

Our recent Growth Levers Insight Report found New Zealand businesses are generally strong in the fundamentals, but opportunity exists when it comes to scaling and innovating.

This is where smart, private capital could make a difference. In my recent article Understanding the Whole Value of Private Capital Investors, I highlighted how the right investor can bring more than just capital - they bring a fresh perspective, mentorship, and access to new networks and markets.

Through the BNZ Private Capital proposition, I’ve seen investors:

  • Optimise growth by challenging assumptions and introducing operational improvements.
  • Amplifying vision by aligning and broadcasting founder aspirations across their networks.
  • Balance risk and exit well, providing stability and guiding exit strategies for long-term success.

As I’ve said before, not all dollars are equal. The right match between investor and business owners can unlock outsized outcomes.

Let’s take this moment to match purpose with capital and grow, together.
