Security certificates

Proof that you’re connected to BNZ’s authentic site.

Internet banking is very convenient and we’ve taken steps to make sure it’s also very secure. To protect your confidential information we use Verisign SSL/TLS certificates, which confirm that you’re about to log into a genuine BNZ internet banking website.

Protecting you from the dangers of fake sites

To give you extra peace of mind when banking online, if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or Mozilla Firefox 3 you’ll see that your address bar has turned green.  This is called extended validation and shows that you are on a genuine BNZ internet banking page.  Extended validation certificates are a significant advancement in internet authentication, and help you to feel confident about providing personal information.

If you don’t use a browser or browser version that supports extended validation, you can still  check the security certificate by double clicking on the little yellow padlock symbol at the bottom of the page – it should state that the certificate is issued to www.bnz.co.nz.

Here are some other things you might want to know about our site security:

  • If the address bar changes from http to https this also indicates the connection is more secure
  • If you go to what you think is the BNZ website and the certificate does not state it’s issued to www.bnz.co.nz, or is owned and run by Bank of New Zealand, contact us for advice on 0800 800 468
  • We advise checking the certificate when using publically accessible computers in internet kiosks or utilising free wireless internet access, before entering your secret access credentials
