Anti-virus software
Protecting your computer from viruses and other invaders.
If you’re using BNZ internet banking, we advise you to install and maintain anti-virus software to protect your computer from internet threats. Computer viruses and other forms of rogue software can be successfully avoided with a reliable anti-virus solution.
Protecting your computer from malicious invaders
Computer viruses, spyware and malware can corrupt or delete data on your computer or use your email program to infect other computers. There are many free AV tools which are actually malware themselves and can be turned against you by scrambling your system and demanding a ransom. Some computers infected with malware can be remotely controlled (known as ‘zombies’) and used for illegal purposes such as sending spam emails. Here are some tips to keep your computer virus-free:
- Install and maintain reputable AV (anti-virus) software. If you’re not sure what to get we recommend you talk to a respected computer service agent
- Ensure that your AV software is enabled and can automatically update itself every day over the internet
- Schedule a daily or weekly AV scan of your computer. If the scan finds something, follow instructions to remove the problem
- Remember that threats can arrive in several ways – from compromised websites, email attachments and files accessed from an attached device (such as a USB stick)
- Effective AV software will detect viruses, trojans, rootkits, spyware and malware
- AV software can cause your computer to run slowly if it’s not configured properly. Your computer might also run slowly if it has an infection
