We can do it all for you

Our dedicated Switching Team can make the switching process hassle-free. We can:

  • Communicate with your old bank(s) on your behalf
  • Move your automatic payments, bill payments and direct debits to your new accounts
  • Cancel the payments at your old bank(s)
  • Close your old accounts and transfer any credit balances to your new BNZ account

How to get started

Switch in three easy steps:

The first step when switching to BNZ is to take a look at our accounts2 – we have several types of accounts on offer, so you can be sure that one of them will fit your needs. The next step is to apply at any BNZ store, or alternatively you can start the application process online at any time.

If you prefer to come into a store, here's what you'll need to bring:

  • Two forms of identification, one with a photo (any one of the following: a passport, driver licence, student ID or armed forces ID)
  • Your IRD number
  • A minimum opening deposit of $200 (unless you are also applying for a loan)
  • Once your accounts are set up, we can order you an EFTPOS card and register your internet and telephone banking so you have easy access to all your accounts.

Helpful things to remember when switching accounts

Tell your employer(s), or anyone else who transfers money into your account your new bank account details. Don't forget to tell your tenants, anyone you have shares with, the IRD, WINZ, or any other creditors. You can download this letter template DOC 24KB to give to your employer, or any other parties you receive deposits from, detailing your new account information.

Get a refund when you switch

When you open a new BNZ transaction account, we'll refund your payment establishment fees for the first three months1. Print off this refund voucher PDF 476KB and bring it into your nearest BNZ store, or ask us for one in store. You are entitled to this offer whether you choose to use our Switching Team or complete the switch yourself.
