Eligibility Criteria:
| 1. |
Entrants must be New
Zealanders by birth, naturalisation or by residence in New Zealand
for three years continuously immediately prior to the closing
date. |
| 2. |
Entrants for all award
categories must be 13 years of age or over as at the closing date.
The premier and novice writers’ categories have no maximum
age limit. |
| 3. |
The young writer category
is open only to secondary school pupils (including home schooled
secondary level pupils). Entrants must be attending a secondary
school, or still receiving home schooling at a secondary school
level, at the awards presentation date. Entrants for the young
writer category must be under 19 years of age as at the closing
date. |
| 4. |
The novice writer category
is only open to entrants who have not previously had creative
writing (including, but not limited to, a novel, short story,
poetry or other work of fiction) published or broadcast for payment. |
| 5. |
All entries must be
the original work of the entrant alone. |
| 6. |
No entry may have been
published or broadcast, or submitted for publication or broadcast,
as at the awards’ presentation date. |
| 7. |
No entry may be or
have been entered into any other competition until after the awards’
presentation date. |
| 8. |
Winners of the 2008
awards are not eligible to enter the same award category in 2009.
Any winners prior to 2008 may enter the same award category if
eligible. |
Entry Requirements:

The maximum and minimum
lengths of entries are as follows:
(a) Premier category– min 1000 words, max 5000
words
(b) Novice Writer category – min 1000 words,
max 3000 words
(c) Young Writer category - min 750 words, max 2000
words. |
| 10. |
Only one entry per
entrant per award category is permitted. |
| 11. |
Entrants may enter
into more than one award category however, the same story cannot
be entered into more than one category. |
| 12. |
Each entry must be
accompanied by a completed 2009 entry form, submitted either by
post or online at bnz.co.nz/kmawards. |
| 13. |
Where an entry is posted,
that entry must be postmarked no earlier than 1 May 2009 and no
later than 30 June 2009 (the closing date), otherwise the entry
will not be accepted. |
| 14. |
Where an entry is submitted
online, that entry must be received no earlier than midnight 30
April 2009 and no later than midnight 30 June 2009 (the closing
date). |
| 15. |
Early and late entries
will not be accepted. |
| 16. |
Where an entry is posted,
it must be accompanied by two identical manuscripts, typed in
English and double-spaced. |
| 17. |
Where an entry is submitted
on-line, it must be accompanied by one manuscript, typed in English,
double-spaced and saved as a Word file (.doc) in a PC (not MAC)
format |
| 18. |
All entries must be
submitted under a pen-name (alias). The pen-name only must appear
on the manuscript. Entries will not be accepted if the entrant’s
given name appears on the manuscript (including where the entrant’s
name forms all or part of the document's file name if being submitted
electronically). |
| 19. |
Entries may not contain
any photographs or illustrations and no covers are required. |
| 20. |
Once an entry is submitted,
the manuscript is final. The entry cannot be withdrawn and
no alterations can be made to it. |
| 21. |
No responsibility is
taken for entries. |
| 22. |
For an acknowledgment
of receipt of entry, postal entrants must complete the acknowledgement
portion of the entry form and send it in with the entry form.
On-line entrants will automatically receive a receipt of acknowledgement
by email if a correct email address is provided in the on-line
entry form. |
| 23. |
Manuscripts will not
be returned to the entrants. |
Miscellaneous Terms and Conditions:

The prize for the winner in each
award category is as follows: |

Young Writer category – NZ$1500 paid to
the winner and NZ$1500 paid to the winner's school. The
winner's school will also be provided with a New Zealand writer
who will host a creative writing workshop at the school. |

If a home schooled pupil wins $1500 will be paid
to the winner and $1500 will be paid to a secondary school or
a registered charity of the winners choice and the winner will
be provided with a creative writing workshop from a NZ writer. |
| 25. |
The awards' administering
committee will endeavor to arrange first publication and/or broadcast
of the winning manuscripts. |
| 26. |
A selection of manuscripts
from the Young Writer category (other than the winner) may be
chosen for publishing after the awards presentation. |
| 27. |
All entries submitted
remain the property of the entrant. However, BNZ reserves
the right to publish the winning entries in the Premier and Novice
writer categories, and to publish any manuscript entered into
the Young Writer category, without fee. |
| 28. |
The awards' administering
committee will contact winners no later than 30 days prior to
the awards presentation date. |
| 29. |
Unsuccessful entrants
will not be contacted. |
| 30. |
Winners will be announced
on the BNZ website bnz.co.nz/kmawards on the business day following
the awards presentation date. |
| 31. |
The awards presentation
(by invitation only) will be held in Wellington in or about October
2009– actual date of awards presentation to be confirmed
(the Awards Presentation Date).
BNZ may provide assistance to any winner to cover such winner's
costs in attending the awards presentation, at BNZ's sole discretion.
Any such assistance will be discussed with the winner at the time
the winner is contacted under clause 28 of these terms and conditions.

Winners' names, entry
details, biographical information and photographs will be required
by the Awards administering Committee and will be used for promotional
purposes. |
| 33. |
In relation to each
award category, judges' decisions are final and no correspondence
will be entered into. |

All online entries must be accompanied by one manuscript typed in English,
double-spaced and saved as a Word file (.doc) in a PC (not Mac) format.
The pen name only must appear on the manuscript.
For postal entries
All postal entries must include a completed entry form and two identical
manuscripts,
typed in English and double spaced. The only name to appear on the manuscript
must
be the author's pen name.
