Security

At BNZ we're big on security because we want to help keep your money and personal information extra safe from risks of theft or fraud. We've got secure systems in place to help prevent unauthorised use of, and access to, your personal and business information and bank accounts. Combined with your own computer anti-virus measures and security procedures, we believe we’ve got your bases covered.

To protect the security of all your financial transactions we recommend the following guidelines

  • Protect your PINs and passwords. Read the New Zealand Bankers' Association leaflet, 'Protecting your Cards, Pins & Passwords' (PDF 733KB).
  • Sign new credit cards and 24 Hour Banking cards as soon as you receive them
  • Report lost or stolen cards and cheques immediately
  • Check your statements, and report any unauthorised transactions to the Bank on 0800 24 00 00 or +64 4 924 24 24 from overseas - international toll charges will apply
  • Notify the Bank of change of address details. To update your details login to Internet Banking and use the secure Contact Us page, call 24 Hour Telephone Banking, or visit any of our nationwide stores
  • When disposing of documents containing personal information, ensure they are properly destroyed or shredded
  • Do not include any confidential or sensitive information in emails. To enquire about your transactions and accounts use 24 Hour Telephone Banking, login to Internet Banking and use the secure Contact Us page, or visit any of our nationwide branches
  • Be suspicious of telephone calls, emails or letters requesting your PIN or password, as Bank staff should never request this information
  • Do not give strangers personal information about your accounts or cards
  • When using your credit card online, make sure the padlock symbol, indicating a secure environment, appears at the bottom of the browser. Or, look for a ‘s’ after the http in the web address. We are committed to ensuring that you are protected when shopping online with NetPledge & NetPromise
  • Unless you initiate the call, do not disclose personal or account information over the phone
  • Always visit BNZ’s website and Internet Banking by typing www.bnz.co.nz into the address bar, or by using your bookmarks or favourites
  • If you receive a suspicious email or an email from an unknown or strange sender, consider deleting the email without opening it, and do not open any attachments or follow any links within the email
  • Be cautious when using a computer in public places such as Internet cafes. Check that their anti-virus software and firewalls are up to date. Do not leave the screen idle for long periods or leave the computer unattended at any time, particularly when using internet banking services
  • NetGuard is an extra layer of online security that helps protect your money and your identity. It’s free and all our online customers need to have it.
  • Install anti-virus software on your computer, and update the software’s virus definitions frequently
  • Install a personal firewall on your computer
  • Use a reputable Internet Service Provider, and review their policy on spam
  • Be aware of fraud - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

If you have any concerns about your BNZ accounts or you suspect you have responded to a fraudulent email, please call our Customer Solutions Advisors on 0800 275 269 or +64 4 494 9098 from overseas - international toll charges apply.
