Our Goal
We’re committed to being carbon neutral by September 2010. To make sure we reach our goal, we’re always on the lookout for ways to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly. We’ve taken Business Reply Envelopes out of circulation, we’re reducing the amount of electricity we use, we’ve implemented a recycling program in all our corporate offices and we’re even reducing the size of business chequebooks. Before we started our journey towards carbon neutrality, we had to gain an understanding of what needed improvement.
First things first
How do we impact the environment? Our main environmental impacts arise from our building and equipment use as well as office waste, maintenance, cleaning and fuel used by our vehicle fleet.
What are we doing about it?
We’re working towards becoming carbon neutral by employing a range of energy reduction initiatives including:
• Designing better offices: our new corporate offices in Auckland have recently received a NZ Green Building Council 5-Star rating for sustainable design
• Piloting a recycling initiative that has reduced our waste to landfill by 84%
• We have introduced double-sided printing of credit card statements, saving over 5 million sheets of paper a year
• Increasing the use of video conferencing to cut down staff air travel, introduced a PC switch-off time in the evenings and installed timer switches for lights in meeting rooms
• In 2007, we reduced the number of reports printed by 885,000 pages and we’re aiming for 1 million more pages in 2008
We annually report our environmental performance in the NAB Group Corporate Responsibility Review and Corporate Responsibility Detailed Fact and Information Pack which are available on the NAB Group website.
