Back in 1987, in a tough economic climate, four Kaikoura families were faced with a very bleak future. They decided to build a strong financial base for themselves and their community, and secure the welfare of generations to come. Inspired by the legend of their ancestor Paikea, they mortgaged their homes, bought a small boat, and took tourists out to see the whales.
Since 1997, BNZ has been on board with Whale Watch Kaikoura. Today it is a multi-million dollar business with a fleet of five high-tech catamarans, hosting around 100,000 visitors each year.
