It's our namesake and most treasured national icon. But right now, in many regions the kiwi is in real danger of becoming extinct. Today, there are just 70,000 kiwi left in New Zealand. Every day, 10 more are taken by stoats, ferrets, dogs and cats. Only 5% of chicks hatched in the wild survive to adulthood.
